On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence. Most delegates added their signatures on August 2, 1776, with a handful signing later. In all, fifty-six men put their names to the document — an act of treason against the Crown that risked their lives, their fortunes, and their families.
They ranged in age from Edward Rutledge of South Carolina, just 26, to Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, who was 70. John Hancock, President of the Congress, signed first and largest. What follows is the complete roster of all fifty-six, organized by the thirteen colonies they represented.
